Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He was born on February 12, 1809, in Kentucky. Lincoln is best known for leading the country during the Civil War and for helping to abolish slavery. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which declared freedom for enslaved people in the Confederate states. Lincoln also supported the idea of a united nation. He was assassinated in 1865, shortly after the end of the Civil War. Today, Abraham Lincoln is remembered as one of the greatest American presidents.
