The Selfish Giant
Spring came but in the garden of the Selfish Giant it was still winter. The birds (1) did not care to sing in it as there (2) were no children. The only ones who were pleased were the Snow and the Frost. “Spring (3) has forgotten this garden,” they cried, “so if it never (4) comes, we (5) shall live here all the year round.” Then they (6) invited the North Wind (7) to stay with them, and it came as it (8) had wanted to visit the garden for a long time. It (9) was wrapped in furs, and even the Snow and the Frost (10) were frightened when they (11) saw it. The giant (12) had been waiting for two weeks already when he understood that spring was so late. “I can’t see the Spring (13) approaching my garden,” said the Selfish Giant, as he (14) was sitting at the window (15) looking out at his cold white garden. But the Spring never (16) came, nor the Summer nor the Autumn. One morning the Giant (17) was lying awake in bed when he heard some lovely music. It sounded so sweet to his ears that he (18) thought that the King’s musicians (19) were passing
The Giant (20) had not heard such lovely music since he came to his castle. “I believe the Spring (21) has returned at last,” said the Giant. He jumped out of bed and looked out.

The giant had been waiting for two weeks already when he understood that spring was so late. “I can’t see the Spring approaching my garden,” said the Selfish Giant, as he was sitting at the window looking out at his cold white garden. But the Spring never came, nor the Summer nor the Autumn. One morning the Giant was lying awake in bed when he heard some lovely music. It sounded so sweet to his ears that he thought that the King’s musicians were passing. The Giant had not heard such lovely music since he came to his castle. “I believe the Spring has returned at last,” said the Giant. He jumped out of bed and looked out.
