An Improper Day

Before the last war, officers in the navy when the ship was in port had a lot more freedom than they do nowadays. Then they were expected to lead a busy social life, and they also took an active part in sports activities ashore. It was therefore quite difficult for them to find time for all their other duties. Usually, all the officers of a ship met together once a week to discuss business plans for the coming week. One meeting was held on board a ship one day at 5 o’clock, and after the regular business matters had been completed it was the time to arrange the date of the next meeting. Friday of the next week was suggested by the captain, and Monday of the week after was also mentioned, but neither of them suited the members of the crew. They had already made their arrangements for the weekend. So in the end it was agreed that the meeting would take place on Wednesday since this day of the week was just in its middle. As the officers were leaving one of them heard one of the sailors say, “Wednesday is the worst day because it interferes with two weekends.”
