An Improper Day
Before the last war, officers in the navy when the ship was in port (1) had a lot more freedom than they do nowadays. It was therefore quite difficult for them (5) to find time for all their other duties. Usually, all the officers of a ship (6) met together once a week to discuss business plans for the coming week. One meeting (7) was held on board a ship one day at 5 o’clock, and after the regular business matters (8) had been completed it was the time (9) to arrange the date of the next meeting. Friday of the next week (10) was suggested by the captain, and Monday of the week after (11) was also mentioned, but neither of them (12) suited the members of the crew.
