7 You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen friend, Arnold by name. In his letter Arnold writes:
«Yesterday evening we had Christmas dinner.
The day before yesterday we had decorated the X-mas tree, then Mum and Cranny cooked some tasty things we had for dinner. I wrote my resolutions:
Starting today I will:
1. Be nice to everyone, whether I like them or not.
2. Stop lying.
3. Stop forgetting my Algebra notebook.
4. Keep my comments to myself.
Do you celebrate X-mas? With whom do you usually celebrate it? Do you ever make resolutions? Where did you spend your last X-mas and school holidays? I’m going to visit the USA in January.
Write a letter to Arnold. In your letter:
• answer his questions;
• ask 3 questions about his plans for his journey to the USA.
Are you satisfied with the mark your teacher gave you for your written papers? Can you improve your results?
Look through the steps of Unit Two and say:
• if the material of the unit was interesting, useful, widening your scope;
• if you found any new ideas in the texts and exercises of the unit;
• if any of the problems raised in the unit were surprising, making you think them over;
• if the unit helped you to revise grammar and vocabulary;
• what new information about the English language you have learnt;
• what things were easy/difficult;

Prepare a computer presentation on the topic “In Harmony with Others”. You may consider these golden rules:
• I try to treat others the way I want to be treated myself;
• I can’t imagine my life without my family and friends;
• knowing how to avoid quarrels is a way to harmony.
Be ready to give your presentation in class. It shouldn’t take longer than five minutes. Try to make your presentation interesting, illustrate it with photos, pictures etc.

6. Comment on one of the statements.
I would like to comment on the statement that families are more important than friends for teenagers.
In my opinion, family is the most important part of a teenager’s life. First of all, parents and close relatives always support us and help us in difficult situations. Secondly, family gives us love, care and a feeling of safety. Finally, family members know us better than anyone else and can give useful advice.
However, some people think that friends are more important for teenagers. They say that friends understand teenagers better because they have similar interests and problems. Besides, friends help young people feel independent and confident.
I do not fully agree with this opinion. Friends are certainly important, but they can change, while family is always there. A teenager may have many friends, but only one family, and it is family that usually helps in the most serious moments.
To sum up, I believe that families are more important than friends for teenagers because they provide love, support and stability.
7. Letter to Arnold
Dear Arnold,
Thanks for your letter. It was great to hear from you.
Yes, I celebrate Christmas with my family. Usually we have a special dinner together, decorate the house and exchange presents. Of course, I sometimes make resolutions too, but it is not always easy to keep them.
Last Christmas and the school holidays I spent at home with my parents and grandparents. We had a very warm and happy time together.
I’m glad you are going to visit the USA in January. What cities are you going to visit? How long will you stay there? Will you travel alone or with your family?
Write back soon.
Best wishes,
[Your name]
8. Self-assessment
I think the material of Unit Two was interesting and useful. It helped me to learn more about family relations, friendship and harmony with other people. Some texts made me think about how important it is to avoid quarrels and respect other people’s opinions.
The unit also helped me revise grammar and vocabulary. I remember tasks about writing a letter, expressing my opinion and using the correct tense forms. Some exercises were easy, but writing a long text was more difficult because I had to organize my ideas clearly.
Overall, I am satisfied with my results, but I can still improve them by practising writing more often and learning new words.
9. Presentation “In Harmony with Others”
In harmony with others means living peacefully and respectfully with the people around us. I think this is very important because our life becomes happier when we have good relations with family, friends and classmates.
One golden rule is to treat others the way you want to be treated yourself. If we are polite, kind and honest, people usually behave the same way with us. Another important rule is to value family and friends, because they support us in difficult moments. We also need to know how to avoid quarrels. Sometimes it is better to stay calm, listen to another person and try to understand their point of view.
Harmony is not something that happens by itself. We should work on it every day. If we learn to respect others, forgive small mistakes and be patient, our life will become much better.
