Unit 4.8 Speaking Skills
Task 1 (3 minutes)
- RNE Imagine you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently; then be ready to read it aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.
Lake Baikal, the deepest lake in the world, is home to a very unusual resident: The Baikal seal, or nerpa. It is the only species of seal that lives entirely in fresh water. It is thought to have lived in this lake in Siberia for two million years. No one is sure how it got there. One theory is that at some time Lake Baikal joined the sea and it came from there. Or it could have swum up streams and rivers to the lake.
The Baikal seal is different from other seals. Adults are around one and a third metres long, making them the world’s smallest seal. Their bodies contain a larger than usual amount of blood, which makes them exceptional divers. They live longer than other seals, too, reaching an age of up to fifty. This unique animal still continues to survive, in spite of being hunted. However, it needs all our care to ensure its future.
- a) Listen to two students reading the text. Who gave a better reading?
b) Listen to the weaker student again and evaluate his/her performance. Copy the table and tick one box for each item.

- a) Listen to two students asking the questions. Who gives a weaker performance?
b) Identify the weaker student’s mistake. Choose one item.
- Leaving out a question
- misinterpreting a prompt
- making grammatical mistakes
- using the wrong intonation
- asking an irrelevant question
Task 3 (3.5 minutes)
- RNE Imagine that these are photos from your photo album. Choose one photo to present to your friend. You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12–15 sentences). In your talk, remember to speak about:
when you took the photo
what/who is in the photo
what is happening
why you took the photo
why you decided to show the picture to your friendYou have to talk continuously, starting with: “I’ve chosen photo number …”
- Listen to a student talking about one of the photos. Which of the photos is the student describing? Why did the student take the photo? Why did the student decide to show the picture to their friend?

Task 3
5. I’ve chosen photo number one to talk about. I took this photo when my class went to plant trees in a field near our school. The field was completely empty, so we thought we would make a park there. In the photo you can see three of my classmates. They are getting ready to dig a hole in the ground and plant some saplings. Hopefully, they will grow into beautiful big trees. They have small shovels to dig the holes. As you can see, the ground was really dry, so we needed a watering can. It was hard work, and Mandy is wearing gloves to protect her hands. I took the photo so that we could show everybody what we had done. I also wanted to remember the day because we had such a good time. I am showing you this picture because I feel proud of the work we did.
6. The student is describing photo number one. He took the photo to show what they had done and to remember the day. He decided to show it to his friend because he felt proud of the work they did.
