Задача

Task 1 (3 minutes)

  1. Listen to the text. Then listen again and read the text aloud at the same time.

    Russians have a long tradition in ice skating. Since Alexander Nikitich Panshin became the first national champion in 1897, they continue to shine at this sport. But ice skating is not only for the professionals. Moscow alone boasts five recreational skating rinks. The one in Gorky Park is perhaps the most impressive. In fact, it’s one of the largest in Europe.

  2. Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently; then be ready to read it aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

    A person’s choice of free time activity tells us a lot about them. Strong, outgoing personalities may prefer doing competitive sports while quieter people will choose something more recreational. Basketball and swimming, for example, both require a certain amount of physical stamina and determination if you want to do well at them. Fishing and gardening are far less demanding activities. They bring you close to nature and the outdoors. Patience is needed, however, as you don’t see the results of your efforts instantly! Activities can also be divided into social and solitary types. Some people will enjoy hanging out with friends, whereas others are quite happy on their own reading a good book. Whatever our choice, one thing’s for sure. Having some kind of leisure activity is important because it helps us to recharge our batteries. That, in turn, makes us more efficient in performing our daily tasks!

  3. a) Listen to two students reading the text. Who gave a better reading?

    b) Listen to the weaker student again and evaluate his/her performance. Copy the table and tick one box for each item.

Task 2 (3 minutes)

  1. Listen to someone asking a question twice. Then choose A or B for the correct intonation.

    A. Is the gym open on Sundays?

    B. Is the gym open on Sundays?

  2. Study the advertisement.

    Top Form Gym

    membership from only £15 a month

    You are considering joining the gym and now you’d like to get more information. In 1.5 minutes, you are to ask five direct questions to find out the following:

    1. opening hours;
    2. number of classes;
    3. if there are reduced yearly rates;
    4. equipment to bring with you;
    5. if parking is available.

    You have 20 seconds to ask each question.

  3. a) Listen to two students asking the questions. Who gives a weaker performance?

    b) Identify the weaker student’s mistake. Choose one item.

    • leaving out a question;
    • misinterpreting a prompt;
    • making grammatical mistakes;
    • using the wrong intonation;
    • asking an irrelevant question.

Task 4 (3.5 minutes)

  1. Complete the gaps with the words below to compare and contrast the photos.

    whereas, difference, both, while, also, similarity, differ

    These two photos 1) ______ show people doing challenging sports — motocross and horse racing. One 2) ______ is that they were both taken outdoors. 3) ______ the people are taking part in a competitive race. Where they 4) ______ is that photo 1 involves motorcycles 5) ______ photo 2 involves horses. Another 6) ______ is that in the first picture the riders are getting ready to start 7) ______ in the second picture the race has already started.

  2. Study the two photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

    • give a brief description of the photos (action, location);
    • say what the pictures have in common;
    • say in what way the pictures are different;
    • say which of the activities are more popular in your country;
    • explain why.

    You will speak for not more than 2 minutes. You have to talk continuously.

6b) The mistake is making grammatical mistakes.

Task 4

7)

These two photos both show people doing challenging sports — motocross and horse racing. One similarity is that they were both taken outdoors. Also, the people are taking part in a competitive race. Where they differ is that photo 1 involves motorcycles whereas photo 2 involves horses. Another difference is that in the first picture the riders are getting ready to start while in the second picture the race has already started.

Task 8

In photo one I can see a man coming down a ski slope. In fact, he’s probably a professional skier, as I can see a number on his outfit. I think there are woods in the background and in the foreground of the picture there is a red pole marking out the course.

In photo two, there is a girl who is windsurfing. She’s standing on her sailboard and adjusting the sail. In the background there are mountains.

The pictures are similar in that they both show exciting outdoor sports that require skill. In both sports you have to control your movements and keep your balance. Likewise, both windsurfing and skiing carry a risk of injury, even if you are experienced.

The main difference between the two pictures is that one shows a professional in a competition, whereas the other shows someone who is probably just enjoying themselves on holiday. Another difference is that in photo one the man is trying to avoid obstacles like the pole, while in photo two the girl is concentrating on not capsizing.

In my country skiing is the more popular activity. This is because we have a lot of snow and a lot of mountains, so people learn how to ski from an early age.
