Happiness works in a way C. Let’s say you are in a good mood D. You tell your friends about it. They care about you and how you feel, E. Then they go home and spread the happiness to their family members. One of these family members, the mother, for example, goes to the supermarket and because she is happy she smiles at the checkout girl. The checkout girl, seeing this big smile, starts to think her job isn’t so bad after all and then she treats her next customer F. This chain of happiness goes on and on. Marmite is a sticky, brown spread, with a strong, salty taste. You either love it or hate it. It was invented in Britain in the late 19th century. Because it contains a lot of vitamins, it became popular during World War I. It is made from the yeast that is left over from brewing beer. The actual recipe, however, is a secret. Marmite is eaten on bread, toast or biscuits, but it can also be mixed into hot water to make a drink. It is often combined with cheese in the form of a cheese and Marmite sandwich. In New Zealand, people make sandwiches with Marmite and potato crisps. In 2012, all the New Zealand shops began to run out of Marmite because the factory that produces it was damaged in an earthquake. This caused panic buying, with reports of sellers asking as much as 800 New Zealand dollars for a jar. This shows just how much some people like Marmite!

Task 9

Dear Ian,

Thanks for your letter. In my country, people eat a lot of meat, fish, vegetables, soups and bread. If you are vegetarian, it will not be a problem, because there are many dishes without meat. You should definitely try borscht, vegetable salads, dumplings with potatoes and pancakes with cottage cheese.

What kind of places would you like to visit while you are here? How long are you staying? Would you like me to show you around the city? And what day will you arrive?

Best wishes,
[Your Name]
