Imagine you are one of the characters in the extract. Write a letter to a friend, describing your first night at Shangri-La. Include:
- who you meet;
- what you do;
- what you think about the people and the place.

Dear Tom,
I have just spent my first night at Shangri-La, and I must tell you about it. We were met by a Chinese host who led us through the monastery and showed us our rooms. I also met Barnard, Miss Brinklow, Mallinson, and Conway.
The place is extraordinary. It is warm, clean, and very comfortable, and the view from the windows is wonderful. The people here are polite and calm, though Mallinson is eager to leave at once. Barnard even made jokes about the bathroom, and the host answered very politely.
As for me, I feel surprisingly peaceful here. Everything seems unusual, but pleasant. Shangri-La is unlike any place I have ever seen.
