Information for the guest:
- You are in England. You are invited to the party but you don’t know when to come or what to take with you.
- You are Russian and you want to phone a city in England. You’ve got the telephone number 0044 123 9743764, but whenever you dial it, you get the message “The number you have dialled has not been recognized”.
- You are in the US. You don’t know how to use the cash machine.
- You are in your host’s kitchen. You don’t know how to make tea.
- You don’t know how to send an e-mail from your host’s computer.
- You want to know how to get to the nearest restaurant from your host’s house.
- You don’t know how to use your host’s CD player.
Sample role-play:
A: Hello! Come in, please.
B: Thank you. I’m glad to be here, but I have a few questions.
A: Of course. What would you like to know?
B: I’m invited to the party, but I don’t know when to come or what to bring with me.
A: The party starts at 7 p.m. Please come a little earlier, at about 6:45. You can bring a small present, for example flowers or a box of chocolates.
B: Thank you. That’s very helpful.
B: Excuse me, I’m in Russia and I want to phone a city in England. I’ve got the number 0044 123 9743764, but when I dial it, I get the message that the number has not been recognized.
A: In Russia you should dial 810 instead of 00. So first dial 810, then 44 for England, and then 123 9743764.
B: I see. Thank you.
B: And how do I use the cash machine?
A: First, insert your card, then enter your PIN, choose the amount of money, and take your card and cash.
B: I’m in your kitchen. How do I make tea?
A: Boil some water, put a tea bag into a cup, pour the hot water in, and wait a few minutes. Then add sugar or milk if you like.
B: How can I send an e-mail from your computer?
A: Open your mailbox, click “Compose”, type the address, write your message, and press “Send”.
B: How do I get to the nearest restaurant from your house?
A: Go straight along this street, turn left at the traffic lights, and you’ll see the restaurant on the right.
B: And how do I use your CD player?
A: Put the disc in, close the tray, and press “Play”.
