I spent the rest of the day alone. The idea of going back to the room was terrible. Of course, Belle and her friends did not want to talk to me after they had seen me with David.
I went back to the room before the opening ceremony to change. When I entered the room, Mary ran up to me.
“At last!” she exclaimed. “Where have you been? We have been waiting for you. Come on, get changed, and don’t forget to put on something warm. There will be a picnic instead of the usual dinner.”
To my surprise, all my roommates were quite friendly and even gave me advice about what to wear. I did not understand anything, but I had no time to think. We had to hurry and go to the ceremony.
The ceremony took place outside the dining hall. It started with the raising of the flag, which reminded me of our summer camp in Russia, where we used to do the same things. Then everyone began to sing. It was a camp song, and many of the campers knew it by heart.
I looked around to see how many newcomers there were and soon realised that there were none. I greeted everyone and decided to ask Mary to write down the words of the song for me.
Then the camp director came forward and welcomed everyone to a new year at Pinelands Camp. I liked his speech. It was short and witty.
When the director finished his speech, a thin, grey-haired woman took his place. She seemed familiar, and I remembered seeing her the day before. It was Meredith Nutt, the head counsellor.
I heard a sigh next to me. It was Mary. She whispered in my ear:
“We call her Crunch. She is the most pompous person I have ever known, and her speech is always the longest. Get ready to sit here for a while. Every year we play a little game. Each of us writes one of Crunch’s favourite words on a piece of paper, and we count how many times she says it during her speech. The person whose word is mentioned most often wins. My choice this year is pride. Just count the words with me. Belle chose lifelong friendship, Hailey chose control, and Cindy chose safety.”
