Hall Pycroft had been a clerk. He had lost his job and had difficulty finding another one. At last, he found a job in a very good company called Mawson’s. However, on the same day, Pycroft was offered another job. A man called Arthur Pinner told him that he had heard a lot about his financial ability and wanted to hire him as the business manager of a new company. The offer was so good that Pycroft agreed. He had to go to Birmingham and start work the next day.

Before he left, he had written a letter to Pinner’s brother to tell him that he had agreed to take the new job. It was Pinner’s idea, but Arthur did not find it strange. In Birmingham, Pycroft got rather disappointed that the office of his new company looked run-down. However, Pinner’s brother promised him that it would change soon.

Pycroft spent a week in Birmingham. All that time, he had been doing odd jobs for Mr Pinner. While they were talking a week later, Pinner laughed, and Pycroft noticed his tooth. It looked exactly like his brother’s tooth. Then Pycroft understood that Mr Pinner was the man who had come to him in London.

Pycroft rushed to London to ask the famous detective Mr Sherlock Holmes for advice. Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson agreed to help and arrived in Birmingham with Mr Pycroft. When they entered the office, they noticed that Pinner was very pale and nervous. Pinner asked his visitors to wait and left the room. Soon Pycroft and his friends heard a loud noise from another room and burst into it. Pinner tried to hang himself.

Sherlock Holmes explained the criminals’ plan to his client. Arthur Pinner worked together with his brother. Arthur Pinner’s task was to get a sample of Pycroft’s handwriting and keep him away from London. Meanwhile, his brother learnt to imitate Pycroft’s handwriting and took his position at Mawson’s. The clerk’s position enabled him to get access to valuable securities kept at Mawson’s.

The only thing Sherlock Holmes did not understand was why Pycroft’s employer tried to hang himself. He understood everything when the detective looked through a newspaper. He found out that there had been an attempt to rob Mawson’s. A guard was killed, but the criminal was caught. The police were looking for the criminal’s brother. Sherlock Holmes informed the police where the brother was.
