Meal times in Britain have changed a lot.

1. In the past, children were not brought up close to their parents. They usually ate in the kitchen or in the nursery, not with the family.
2. The father was top dog at family meals. He took precedence over everyone else.
3. There were strict rules of behaviour at the table. Children were not allowed to speak until spoken to and had to behave properly.
4. Today many children still have to ask permission to leave the table, which shows that they are often forced to come to family meals and would prefer to eat elsewhere.
