  1. An interview and a report differ in length, language style, register and form of presentation. An interview is presented as a series of questions and answers, while a report is a connected text.
  2. The report is much shorter because it summarises the content of the interview and gives only the essential information.
  3. The first sentence is the topic sentence. It introduces the subject and sets the scene.
  4. The language of the report is more neutral and objective. Some of the expressive features of the interview are omitted.
  5. Direct speech is not used all the time because a report must be concise. Reporting an interview shortens and tidies it up by omitting hesitations, repetitions and other unnecessary details.
  6. Reporting verbs give additional meaning and show the speaker’s tone and mood. For example, to admit can show modesty, to recall can express nostalgia, and to explain is neutral. Without these verbs, some of the meaning would be lost.
