4. Listen to Mr Travis and Eckels talking in the pre-historic wilderness. When the teacher pauses, try and predict the answer Mr Travis is about to give.

The predicted answers are:

1. Mr Travis: We don’t want to change the future. We don’t belong in the past. If we accidentally killed an important animal, a bird, an insect or even a flower, we could destroy an important link in the development of a species.
2. Mr Travis: What about the foxes that need those mice to survive? If a dozen mice disappear, a fox dies. If ten foxes disappear, a lion dies of starvation. The whole balance of nature may be destroyed. Millions of years later, a caveman may die of hunger because you killed one mouse.
