1. The facts are expressed in the Past Simple:

• It was cold and it started to rain.
• I saw one.
• I crossed the street and I was there.
• I sat at a round table and asked for a coffee.

The process is expressed in the Past Continuous:

• I was walking around.
• I was looking for a restaurant.

2. The sentence “I had never thought …” contains the Past Perfect, which shows that the action happened before another action in the past. The later action is expressed by the Past Simple.
