Kristy Ross from Australia describes one of the most important holidays of her country.
1) What are the main features of this celebration?
How we celebrated Australia Day
Australians have a national holiday every January 26th to remember their origins and celebrate their achievements. Australia Day commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet from Great Britain and the raising of the British Flag at Sydney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip in 1788. On this day people attend an organised community event or get together with family and friends to celebrate the national day.
Personally, I spent the last Australia Day with my friends and it turned out to be the highlight of my holidays. First of all, my friends and I attended the spectacular Woggan-ma-gule Morning Ceremony of native Australians which took place in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens and began at 8.00 am. Through song and dance we honoured the spirits of past inhabitants.
Then, we went to Hyde Park where we were treated to a delicious free breakfast. There were bands singing traditional and contemporary songs in the park. Everyone wore something “Australian” or carried a flag. Hyde Park was transformed into the city’s biggest back yard, with hundreds of people under the trees with their picnic baskets. The park offered a heartwarming atmosphere. It was wonderful to be in a place where people were happy and they were celebrating together. The kids were having fun making and decorating boomerangs, as all Australian children are taught more and more about the native population.
In the afternoon Sydney’s Lord Mayor welcomed people from around the world at the annual Citizenship Ceremony. After that, we went to Darling Harbour for the rest of the day. There’s no better place to visit on Australia Day than Darling Harbour, where you can have a huge day of free entertainment including the official Australia Day Spectacular.
At 7.00 pm the Australia Day Spectacular started. It included addresses from the key political figures, boat parades and a live concert. I especially liked the concert. It was a multimedia symphony of light, sound and music which ended with marvellous fireworks at 9.00 pm.
All in all, this year’s Australia Day celebration was fantastic. The staff and volunteers did a magnificent job on everything. But Australia Day is much more than barbecues and fireworks. It is more than another public holiday. On Australia Day, we come together as a nation to celebrate what’s great about Australia and being Australian.
