Think of an outstanding event in the history of your country you would like to observe as a holiday:
- Describe the origin of this holiday.
- Describe the ways that people might celebrate this event.
- Describe the special costumes.
- Describe food that could be prepared.
- Write about any prominent characters this holiday might be devoted to.
- Describe special gifts, songs and symbols.
- Illustrate your project with pictures, music and songs.

Project: Russian Holiday History
Maslenitsa is one of the most famous traditional holidays in Russia. It has very old roots and comes from pagan times, when people celebrated the end of winter and the coming of spring. Later, Maslenitsa became connected with Orthodox traditions.
During Maslenitsa, people say goodbye to winter and welcome spring. The holiday lasts for a week. Families and friends visit each other, go for walks, play games, sing songs and take part in different folk activities. One of the main symbols of Maslenitsa is blini — thin pancakes. They are round and golden like the sun, so they symbolize warmth and new life.
People also make straw dolls, ride horses, have fairs and enjoy traditional performances. In some places, there are dances, competitions and outdoor games. On the last day of the holiday, people burn the Maslenitsa doll to say goodbye to winter.
Maslenitsa is a bright and cheerful holiday. It helps people remember Russian traditions and enjoy time with their family and friends.
