Here is an extract from The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 3/4 by Sue Townsend.
Saturday January 17th
Nigel came round to see if I wanted to go to the pictures but I told him I couldn’t, because I was going to the doctor’s about the spot. Dr Taylor must be one of those overworked GPs* you are always reading about. He didn’t examine the spot; he just said I mustn’t worry. I told him about my bad home life and my poor diet, but he said I was well nourished. So much for the National Health Service.Thursday March 12th
Woke up this morning to find my face covered in huge red spots. My mother said they were caused by nerves but I am still convinced that my diet is inadequate. My mother rang Dr Gray’s receptionist to make an appointment, but the earliest he can see me is next Monday! For all he knows I could have Lassa fever! I told my mother to say that I was an emergency case but she said I was “over-reacting as usual” … I rang my grandma and she came round in a taxi and took me to her house and put me to bed.Friday March 13th
The emergency doctor came to my grandma’s last night at 11.30 p.m. He diagnosed that I am suffering from acne vulgaris. He said it was so common that it is regarded as a normal state of adolescence. He thought it was highly unlikely that I have got Lassa fever because I have not been to Africa this year. Grandma said she would like a second opinion. That was when the doctor started shouting in a very loud voice, “He has only got a few teenage spots, for Christ’s sake!” Grandma said she would complain to the General Medical Council but the doctor just laughed.Monday June 22nd
Woke up with sore throat, couldn’t swallow, went downstairs and told my father I was ill. He took my temperature: it was 112 degrees Fahrenheit. By rights I should be dead. It is now five minutes to midnight, the doctor is coming in the morning.Tuesday June 23rd
I have got tonsillitis. It is official. I am on antibiotics.Friday June 26th
Doctor said our thermometer is faulty. I feel a bit better.Friday October 23rd
I have had a letter from the hospital to say that I have got to have my tonsils out on Tuesday the twenty-seventh. This has come as a complete shock to me! My father says I have been on the waiting list since I was five years old! So I have had to endure an annual bout of tonsillitis for nine years just because the National Health Service is starved of finance!Monday October 26th
2 p.m. I am in Ivy Swallow Ward.
6 p.m. I have had every part of my body examined. I have been weighed, bathed and measured, but nobody has looked in my throat!Tuesday October 27th
7.30 a.m. I am ready for the operation. I have had an injection, it is supposed to make you sleepy.
9.15 a.m. The operating trolley is coming in my direction!
Midnight. I have had my tonsils out.1) Read Adrian’s notes and say whether Adrian was seriously ill or “was over-reacting as usual”?

Yes, I have had an illness that required me to stay in hospital. I was there for treatment and observation, and the doctors and nurses helped me recover.
