Read Learning to learn note No. 6 about how to write an argument essay. Read the three paragraphs below and decide which of them can be used as an introductory paragraph to an essay on the topic in question.
A) Technology greatly influences our daily lives. The Internet seems to be the biggest addiction of all. People are so addicted to it that they spend more time on the Internet than with their families.
В) Technology increases in popularity, and people’s dependence on it grows. Technology is time-consuming and it has a negative effect on face-to-face communication with family and friends.
C) There are many different opinions about technology and how it affects our everyday lives. Technology is resourceful and helpful in communicating with other people and in developing social skills. At the same time technology distracts people from such important things like family and friends.
Look through the following statements and classify them into “arguments for” and “arguments against” technology. Find out the meaning of the highlighted words on p. 210.
- According to statistics, Internet users only spend three hours a day with their families while non-Internet users spend about five hours a day with their families. Spending less time talking with their families, people experience more stress and feel more lonely and depressed.
- Mobile phones are a quick and easy way to contact family and friends.
- IPods and MP3 players divide people more than bring them together. They isolate teens by putting them into their own world instead of communicating with other people.
- It is much safer to talk face to face rather than using computers, because sometimes people are not completely truthful about who they are.
- People enjoy listening to music on their iPods and MP3 players more than spending time with their family or friends, because music makes their experience of walking through the world easier.
- People who do not use the Internet are invited to more parties, go to more sporting events and have more developed communication skills.
- Technology can bring people together. The Internet is a common place to start new relationships and friendships, because it can create openness, self-confidence and a greater sense of comfort in dealing with other people.
- Technology devices do not let people deal with the real world. Teens are constantly receiving messages and texting back even if it is at a family dinner. To teens, texting is just a way to get away from their family.
- The Internet can make it easier to keep in touch with friends and relatives who live far away. There are many ways to stay in touch through e-mail, social media, online chatting, texting messages or video chatting. And whichever it is, it is easy.
- The teenagers who spend most of their free time in front of a computer are limiting their knowledge that they would get through experiencing new things.
- When people constantly go on social network sites, they become addictive. They don’t bother socialising with other people out in the real world, and they won’t have proper relationships with their family members and friends.
- When some families sit down to dinner together, they usually leave a TV set on in the background. They do not bother turning it off to talk with one another about how the day went. It shows that family members take less interest in each other’s lives. Parents do not know what’s going on in their children’s lives. Children are losing their connection with their parents.
