Unit 4. What is your generation like?

• Look through the Unit and say:
  • what the Unit might be about;
  • what you will learn in the Unit;
  • what topics/problems the Unit is based on;
  • what other topics related to the content of the Unit you would like to discuss.
• Choose any picture from the Unit and decide how it is related to the content of the Unit.
• Look through the headings of the projects on p. 104 and choose one you would like to do.
• Find useful sites on the Internet with interesting information on the topic.

Lesson 1. What are today’s teens like?

1. Information about teenagers often appears in different newspapers. Here are a few quotes from articles about teens.

   1) Vocabulary. How are teenagers characterised in these articles? Find out the meaning of the highlighted words on p. 210.

   When a high school student says he has got great friends, awesome parents and a wonderful girlfriend, he volunteers and has big plans for the future, it seems suspicious. Everyone knows that teenagers are supposed to be moody, angsty, listening to emo music while revealing negative thoughts in social networks and rebelling against their parents.

   According to the experts, teens are happy because their parents are really good at being mums and dads. Their parents have put a ton of resources into kids, from school and extracurricular programmes to sport and recreation opportunities. They have created a life for their children that places value on education, sharing of information, technology and a balance of personal and professional success. The tolerance and respect the average teens feel for one another contributes to their general well-being.

   Teens today are more comfortable expressing their ideas and thoughts. They have freedom of choice about where they go, religion and their ideas. They are cosmopolitan. They see themselves as citizens of the world.

   Growing up has always been tough, but it is no good when a lot of teenagers describe themselves as “unhappy and depressed”. Today grown-ups are failing to deliver their promise to young people. We said that if they worked hard, stayed out of trouble and attended school, they would have a successful and fulfilling life. It turns out we were inaccurate, if not dishonest. The number of 16 and 17-year-old Neets (Not in education, employment or training) has gone up in recent years, and these numbers are going up catastrophically. This generation is being described as “lost”.

   But it is also finding itself. They are clearly different than previous generations. They are nearly always excited, they multitask all the time and lead their lives in a computer world where there is no distinction between real and virtual. The web is their major source of amusement and information. It is not a tool for them: it is a mainstay in their lives. They are much more social, more emotionally open and happier when online. They want to be successful in the eyes of their peers.

   They aren’t amusing, these big babies, who think the world revolves around them, with their peculiar music, total self-absorption and fantasies about what the world ought to be like.

   2) In the articles, find the phrases that describe:

   • a) the characteristic features of teenagers;
   • b) the teens’ attitude to life;
   • c) how grown-ups see teenagers;
   • d) how teenagers see themselves.

   3) Which ideas do you agree with? Which ones do you disagree with?

   4) Word building. In the articles, find the sentences with the same ideas. Translate the sentences paying attention to the highlighted words.

   1. We suspect that some information about teens is not true.
   2. The feeling of angst is typical of teenagers.
   3. Teenagers are considered to be rebellious.
   4. A teenager may be in a good mood and two minutes later in a bad mood.
   5. On average, teenagers are really tolerant with each other.
   6. Teenagers are free to choose whatever they want to do.
   7. Real and virtual worlds are not distinct from each other for a teenager.
   8. A lot of teenagers are looking for fulfilment in their future career.
   9. In most schools pupils have different recreational activities.
   10. Teenagers seem to be very good at multitasking.
   11. Teenagers always seem so self-absorbed.

   5) Express the same ideas in another way. Use the suitable word in brackets.

   1. Parents are responsible for the personal and physical comfort of their children. Many teens say they have great parents. (awesome / well-being)
   2. Sometimes information in the Net doesn’t seem true. Teenagers’ music seems strange to grown-ups. (suspicious / peculiar)
   3. Teens often show their feelings on the Net. It is natural for teens to protest against community norms. (reveal / rebel)
   4. Teenagers change quickly from being happy to being unhappy. Teenagers may feel unhappy and worried about their future. (moody / angsty)
   5. Teenagers are very dependent on the opinion of their classmates and friends. The social nets become extremely important for teenagers. (peers / mainstay)
   6. When a student writes an essay, he may use different books or documents. You can use different instruments to get a result. (sources / tools)
   7. Teenagers use two different types of language: one for talking with adults, the other for talking with their peers. Every teenager dreams of a satisfying career. (fulfilling / distinct)
   8. A member of a Net generation can do a good number of things at the same time. A teenager thinks that the world moves around them. (multitask / revolve)
