Vocabulary. What after-school activities do teenagers choose? Find out the meaning of the highlighted words on p. 210.
I spend my free time volunteering. Volunteering is very important for me. It allows me to meet people who have similar interests. You may make new friends of the same age or of different ages. Or you may make contacts that lead to future jobs. A volunteer job that you love can even help to shape your ideas about your career. We are no longer under the illusion that we can go to university, get a degree and walk into a job. But if we can show that we are self-motivated and have learnt skills ourselves, and even have taught them to fellow workers, that really makes us stand out from the crowd. (Omar)
I have decided to learn dance. I hope to get an opportunity to join weekly classes and then perform on the stage. I know it is very difficult to stick at something for a long period, but it is challenging. It helps to develop life skills, such as discipline, teamwork, self-esteem and confidence. Dance requires huge strength, co-ordination and self-discipline to succeed in it. It is like any sport. Now schools have American-style proms,* I don’t want to be the only boy on the night who looks a fool because he can’t dance. (Bill)
I am a typical teenager whose out-of-school life revolves around several hundred TV channels, the Internet, YouTube and countless social networking sites. They say our generation spends more than 40 hours a week watching television, playing video games and being online. This enormous amount of time does not allow enough time for academic activities, chores, sleep, meals and outside activities. The problem is that I don’t know what else to do. I’m bored when I don’t watch TV or use the Net. (Sam)
My life is revolving around sports. I hardly have time for anything else. Relaxing? Recreation? Basketball is more important than all of those things taken together. I have practice every day even on Saturdays. I often like to be in bed by 9 pm, but that rarely happens. I can’t just give up now. I know I’ll have more opportunities to get into college playing basketball. Sticking with sport looks good for college, and it is very likely that I’ll get a scholarship there. (Alice)
It seems like most teens today are playing sports, studying hard for some standardized test or doing homework non-stop. During summer, there are camps, college visits and travel. Spare time is just for sleeping and eating. Parents are so worried about failing their children that some of my friends have ballet on Monday, karate on Tuesday, horse-riding on Wednesday and so on. Parents hope the more after-school activities a teenager has, the less time he spends in front of the computer. And if teenagers are bored, they behave in ways that are socially inappropriate. Some of my friends are so overburdened with activities that they are getting home late in the evening and trying to get their homework done. It’s good to be involved in activities, but I think it’s really important to get the balance right. (Agatha)
- Why do the teenagers choose this or that activity?
- How do after-school activities influence teenagers’ lives?
- What is the parents’ attitude towards extracurricular activities?
1) Teenagers choose different after-school activities for different reasons:
- Volunteering — to meet people, make friends, get contacts for future jobs and develop career ideas.
- Dance — to get an opportunity to perform, develop life skills, discipline, teamwork, self-esteem and confidence.
- Watching TV / using the Internet — because they are bored and spend a lot of time online or in front of the screen.
- Sports — to stay active, get into college and possibly win a scholarship.
2) After-school activities influence teenagers’ lives a lot. They help them learn useful skills, become more confident and disciplined, make friends and think about their future. At the same time, too many activities can leave them with little free time and make them tired.
3) Parents are very positive about extracurricular activities. They believe that the more activities teenagers have, the less time they spend in front of the computer and the less likely they are to behave badly. However, they also think it is important to keep a balance.
