They do things, because everybody around does it or because they think it’s impolite to refuse. 1) What is offered in the following situations? — Hello, would you like to go to a dance club? — I don’t really want to go there. Well, you see, I don’t really like that loud music. — Why not visit the club for teenagers? — I’d rather not actually. The reason is that I don’t like crowded places. — A lot of people take this drug, it’s mild. Try it. It’s really exciting. — I don’t really fancy doing it. It’s like this, you see, I know the destroying result of drug usage. — Let’s colour our hair purple. It’s really fantastic. — I’d like to, but the thing is, my parents are against it. Well, I don’t want to argue with them. — Would you, please, tell us about youth gangs in your country? — I’m not really willing to do it. The main reason is that I don’t know much about them. 2) Find out in the conversations: + how people say they are unwilling to do something; + how they give reasons. 3) Guess which conversations took place between friends. Which conversations were between people who do not know each other well? 1) In the conversations people are offered different things: going to a dance club, visiting a club for teenagers, trying a drug, colouring their hair purple, and talking about youth gangs.

2) People say they are unwilling to do something like this:

They give reasons like this:

3) The first, second and fourth conversations were probably between people who know each other well, because the speakers sound informal and friendly. The third and fifth conversations were probably between people who do not know each other well, because the speech is more formal and polite.
