1. Saturday. 20th June, 1942 … It’s a strange idea for someone like me to keep a diary; not only because I have never done so before, I want to write, but more than that. I want to bring out all kinds of things that are in my heart. There is a saying that “paper is more patient than man”; it came back to me on one of my slightly melancholy days. Yes, no doubt that paper is patient and as I am not going to show this cardboard-covered notebook, having the proud name of “diary”, to anyone, unless I find a real friend, boy or girl, the reason for my starting a diary: it is that I have no such real friend.
2. … as we are Jewish, we had to emigrate to Holland in 1933. After May, 1940, good times rapidly disappeared: first the war, then the capitulation, followed by the arrival of the Germans. That is when the sufferings of us Jews really began. Anti-Jewish laws followed each other in quick succession. Jews must wear a yellow star, Jews are banned from transport and are forbidden to drive. Jews are only allowed to do their shopping between three and five o’clock and then only in shops which have the placard “Jewish shop”. Jews must be indoors by eight o’clock and cannot even sit in their own gardens after that hour. Jews are forbidden to visit theatres and cinemas. Jews may not take part in public sports. Swimming baths, tennis courts, hockey fields and other sports grounds are all prohibited to them. Jews must go to Jewish schools, and many more restrictions of a similar kind.
3. Tuesday. 4th April, 1944 … I must work, so as not to be a fool, to get on, to become a journalist, because that’s what I want! I know that I can write, a pair of my stories is good, but, on the whole, they are nothing. I am the best critic of my own work. … And if I haven’t any talent for writing books or newspaper articles, well, then I can always write for myself. I can’t imagine that I would have to lead the same sort of life as Mummy and Mrs Van Daan and all the women who do their work and are then forgotten. I must have something besides a husband and children, something that I can devote myself to! I want to go on living even after my death! And therefore I am thankful to God for giving me this gift, this possibility of developing myself and of writing, of expressing all that is in me. … I think I shall succeed, because I want to write!
4. Friday, 23rd June, 1944 Nothing special is going on here. The British have begun their big attack on Cherbourg: according to Van Daan, we’re sure to be free by 10th October. The Russians are taking part in the campaign, and yesterday began their offensive near Vitebsk. We’ve hardly got any potatoes; from now on we’re going to count them out for each person, then everyone knows what he’s getting.
5. Anne’s diary ended on the 1st August, 1944. On the 4th August, 1944, armed German Security Police and Dutch Nazis made a raid on the main office. All were arrested. A few days later, among some old newspapers left lying on the floor of their secret room, an office cleaner found the notebooks. They contained Anne’s diary. Not knowing what they were, he handed them to Miep and Elli. These two girls, whose help to the little Jewish group had been hidden from the Germans during the interrogations, kept the diary until Anne’s father, Otto Frank, returned after the war. His wife and his daughters Margot and Anne died in the concentration camps.
