Look at the two film reviews. Would you like to see any of these films?

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was released in 2011. It is the fourth part of fantasy-adventure films of the Pirates of the Caribbean series which was started in 2003. It should be noted that it lasted for 2 hours and 17 minutes, this is the shortest of the four movies. The new director Rob Marshall — best known for big-budget musicals like Chicago and Nine — replaced Gore Verbinski who directed the first three films. Marshall’s choreographic skills greatly influence the staging of fighting and chasing scenes.

The plot of the film circles around the Fountain of Youth. Captain Jack Sparrow (J. Depp) meets a woman from his past Angelica (P. Cruz). He’s not sure if it’s love and she wants to follow him to the Fountain of Youth. Everything becomes clear when she makes him get aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the terrible pirate Blackbeard (I. McShane). Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he does not know who to be afraid of more: Blackboard or the woman from his past. The production value is excellent; the story keeps you interested most of the time, the action sequences are spectacular and the humour is fine. The best things are the mermaids attack, the opening sequence and the final match between Barbossa and Blackboard.

Somewhere in Northern Russia in a small Russian Orthodox monastery lives an unusual monk, Anatoly. His strange behaviour confuses his fellow monks, but other people who visit the island believe that the man has the power to make people healthy, exorcise demons and foretell the future. Pavel Lungin’s film The Island, starring Petr Mamonov as a “holy monk” Anatoly, has achieved phenomenal success in Russia and abroad. The Island is regarded as one of Russia’s best new films, having won six Golden Eagle Awards in 2007.

Everything is great about this film. The story gets you into the mood at once and it will keep you on the edge of your seat to the very last second. I’d like to stress that the film requires at least a second viewing, both for better understanding and re-enjoying it.

You are going to write a film review. Reviews have their own rules of writing.

1. Look at the outline of a review. Which parts does it consist of?

   1. Introduction:

      1. the title;
      2. the length;
      3. the type of film;
      4. when it was released;
      5. who it was directed by;
      6. previous works of the same director;
      7. the cast;
      8. the awards.

   2. The plot and the characters:

      1. when and where the story takes place;
      2. what happens.
   3. Your opinion of the film and the actors’ performance.
   4. Your recommendations.
2. What information does each review contain according to the outline?
3. Which piece of information from the outline is not mentioned in each review? Is it very important information or you can do without it?
4. Restore the missing information in each review according to the outline.
