1) Vocabulary. What sports events have gone down in history? Find out the meaning of the highlighted words on p. 212.

The World Youth Games was the first international multi-sport event of its kind. More than 7,500 young athletes from 140 countries participated in the Games which took place in Moscow in July, 1998. The opening ceremony was held in the Luzhniki Stadium in the presence of 80,000 spectators. One of the most heartwarming moments was the arrival of the Olympic flame which had been lit in Athens. Another spectacular moment was when two Russian cosmonauts greeted all the spectators from the Space Station Mir. Young athletes competed in a variety of sports that included basketball, volleyball, handball, synchronised swimming, gymnastics, judo, Greco-Roman wrestling and others. In some sports the World Youth Games were more representative than the well-known world youth championships. Although medals were not the most important thing, athletes from 77 countries took home awards and the gold medals went to 22 different countries.

The main objectives of the first World Youth Games were to involve the teenagers in the Olympic movement, promote the Olympic spirit of friendship, partnership and mutual understanding among people and select young talents for the participation in the future Olympic Games. The Games were not only a sporting event. The programme also included different cultural and scientific events. Among other events there was an international “Youth — Science — Olympism” forum: a “Marathon into the 21st century: sport against AIDS and drugs”. All the volunteers who helped to hold the Games were teenagers, and a special daily newspaper was produced by the teenage journalists. Russian people were proud that Moscow was the first host city for this international festival of youth and friendship.

The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) is an international multi-sport event for youths. The YOG are a successor to the World Youth Games. It’s an acknowledgement of the Olympic movement and development of sports in the whole world. Singapore became the first city-state to host the YOG in August, 2010. More than 3,500 athletes aged 14—18 from all over the world competed in 26 sports. It was a youth version of the Olympic Games. The sports contested at the Youth Games were the same as those scheduled for the traditional Games, but with a limited number of disciplines and events. The water polo, synchronized swimming, baseball, as well as softball were left off the schedule. Education and culture were also the major components of the first Summer Youth Olympics. Multicultural and multilingual objectives of the programme emphasised the motto “Learning to know, learning to be, learning to do and learning to live together”. Beginning from 2010, the Games are held every four years complementing the Olympic Games. Russia successfully keeps participating in the YOG. At the next Youth Games the Russian team will take an active part in such sports as archery, athletics, basketball, boxing, fencing, gymnastics, handball, judo, modern pentathlon, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, wrestling and others. More and more spectators from different countries will be watching the Games from the opening ceremony till the closing one.
