Below are some opinions of studying geography. Do all young people understand the importance of geography?

You might think that studying geography is nothing more than learning state capitals. In my opinion, geography is much more than that. Those who study geography are better prepared to understand things affecting our planet, such as climate change, global warming and others. Those who study geography can better understand and explain political events in which different countries, cultures, cities and regions within countries are involved. (Becky)

Geography is a very important and fascinating subject. By studying geography we learn not only about our own country but also about overseas countries. We learn about the mountains, oceans, islands, lakes, volcanoes and a number of other interesting things about the world. Among the important things that we learn in geography are great varieties of animals, plants, birds and land features of the world. As the climate of one place is not the same as that of another, the habits and activities of the people of different regions are also different. I strongly believe that because of its variety geography is one of the most interesting subjects. (Tim)

Geography is very important because it is connected with all aspects of life. I believe that without geography it would be very difficult to know about other cities, countries and continents in the world. The knowledge of geography helps to learn about the physical things around us, such as rivers, mountains, vegetation and climate. And this makes us able to take more care of our environment and improve our living by developing our natural resources. Geography also helps to understand what areas are ideal for definite agricultural products as different types of plants are capable of growing and developing under certain climatic conditions. Inattention of farmers to the climate might cause great damages to agricultural crops. (Adam)

Recently we’ve had a geography survey in our class. Firstly, the results showed that we had poor geographic knowledge: half of the pupils demonstrated a limited understanding of the world beyond our country’s borders. Secondly, twenty-one per cent of students said that knowing where countries were in the world is “not too important”. I disagree with this. In my opinion, geographic knowledge helps to better understand current events not only in the local area but in the whole world. I strongly believe we need to know geography in order to understand today’s world — and succeed in tomorrow’s. (Christina)

With geography in particular, you can pick up quite a lot of skills. For example, in the lessons we do things like note taking, discussions, role play, quizzes and lots of other stuff! When we do a team project, we have to work in groups and should be able to work with other people and individually. When we go on field trips, which are a big love of mine, we learn to carry out research work, make observations, gather and analyse some data. In my opinion, geography gives me all the skills I need in life. (Robert)

Don’t you feel the need to have knowledge of our Earth? If you feel the need to, you have a reason to say that geography is important. The geography of a region affects the living of its inhabitants. It has a direct effect on the art forms, the literature, the food habits and the celebrations of the people that inhabit it. This makes it important to study geography. If you find it boring to learn about the natural resources and climate, you must understand that it is these resources in nature that let us live. So, it helps us to understand how nature influences life. (Emily)
