The political institutions that represent power in the Russian Federation are the President, the Federal Assembly, the Government and the courts.

The branches of power interact in the following way: the President guarantees the basic rights of the people, appoints the Chairman of the Government, can dissolve the Duma and veto laws passed by the Federal Assembly; the people elect the President and the members of the Federal Assembly; the Duma approves the Chairman of the Government; the Constitutional Court can declare laws unconstitutional.
