- What is offered in the following situations?
— Hello, would you like to go to a dance club?
— I don’t really want to go there. Well, you see, I don’t really like that loud music.— Why not visit the club for teenagers?
— I’d rather not actually. The reason is that I don’t like crowded places.— A lot of people take this drug, it’s mild. Try it. It’s really exciting.
— I don’t really fancy doing it. It’s like this, you see, I know the destroying result of drug usage.— Let’s colour our hair purple. It’s really fantastic.
— I’d like to, but the thing is, my parents are against it. Well, I don’t want to argue with them.— Would you, please, tell us about youth gangs in your country?
— I’m not really willing to do it. The main reason is that I don’t know much about them. - Find out in the conversations:
+ how people say they are unwilling to do something;
+ how they give reasons. - Guess which conversations took place between friends. Which conversations were between people who do not know each other well? Why do you think so?
1) In the situations, people are offered:
- a visit to a dance club;
- a visit to a club for teenagers;
- to try a drug;

- to tell about youth gangs in their country.
2) In the conversations, people say they are unwilling to do something like this:

They give reasons with phrases like:

- the thing is…

3) The first, second and fourth conversations are between people who know each other well, because they speak more informally and give personal reasons. The third and fifth conversations are more likely between people who do not know each other well, because the requests are more formal and polite.
