“All right, everyone. In about fifteen minutes we should have our first case, but let’s talk about how we’re going to run our court,” Mrs Brenner said. “This is how it’s going to work. Anyone who has had a complaint filed against him or her by a teacher or administrator will come in with the person who filed the complaint. The person whom the complaint is against will be the defendant, and the person who filed the complaint is called the plaintiff. Both will tell us their story. You should take notes and ask any questions you feel you need to in order to understand the problem thoroughly. We will discuss the rule that has been broken and how justice can be fairly applied. Being a judge is not easy. Now, we need to appoint a senior judge to control the proceedings.”
In Teen Court:
- the defendant is the person against whom the complaint is filed;
- the plaintiff is the person who files the complaint;
- both sides tell their story;
- the judges take notes and ask questions;
- the judges discuss the broken rule and decide how justice should be fairly applied;
- the senior judge controls the proceedings.
