Some pieces of technology are more important for us than others.
What piece of technology couldn’t people below live without? Why are they important for these people? (reading/listening for specific information)

11. There are some problems with computers, cars and telephones.

Look back at the list of things you compiled while doing exercise 1 on page 240. Why has your group chosen these three invaluable things and these three totally useless? Give your arguments.

Technology	Arguments for	Arguments against
Computer	It can be used like a typewriter and an address book. It helps to check spelling. It gives access to the Internet and a lot of information. It is useful for schoolwork. It has quizzes, games and competitions for fun.	People may become too dependent on it. Not all information on the Internet is reliable. A computer can break down. It should not replace meeting friends.
Car	It takes you where and when you want to go. It allows free and comfortable travel. It helps you live where you want. It can be a way of self-expression.	There are too many cars in cities. People often use cars when they could walk. Cars cause pollution and accidents. They are not always essential.
Phone	It helps to keep in touch with friends. It is needed to call the police or an ambulance. A cordless phone saves time. A mobile phone is very useful.	A cordless phone does not work without electricity. A mobile phone is expensive. It can be more trouble than it is worth. Mobiles may be dangerous for health.

I agree that computers are very useful for studying and finding information, but I also agree that we should not depend on them too much. I agree that cars are convenient, but they cause pollution and traffic problems. I agree that phones are necessary, especially in emergencies, but they can be expensive and sometimes harmful.

Possible arguments for the group work:

Computer: useful for study, communication, and entertainment; but it can make people dependent and may give unreliable information.
Car: comfortable and fast; but it causes pollution, accidents, and traffic jams.
Phone: helps people stay in touch and call for help; but it can be expensive and may be bad for health.

We may choose these three things as invaluable because they are very useful in everyday life. We may call some other things useless if they are not needed often and do not help us much in study, work, or communication.
