- You are having a conversation with your friend.
- You are speaking with your teacher.
- You are talking to a colleague of your parent.
When would the following phrases be acceptable?
- I don’t really fancy visiting museums.
- If I could explain: my parents don’t want me to visit clubs.
- Well, I think I’d prefer to go to a dance club.
- PAIR WORK How could you explain that you are unwilling to do the following depending on the situations above? What may be the reasons? You are unwilling:
- to go to the art gallery;
- to try a new dish;
- to do a project;
- to come to school on Sunday;
- to bring your photos to school;
- to go to the cinema with the class;
- to wear a uniform.
- What would you say in the following situations?
Student 1
- Offer to give a lift (подвезти) to your partner.
- Offer to sell a watch cheaper than in a shop.
- Ask to carry a bag through customs on board the plane, explaining that a person will meet this bag on the arrival.
- Ask to exchange money.
- Offer to give to try a drug.
Student 2 Say you are unwilling to do that. Give your reasons.
- Imagine that your foreign friend is visiting you in your home place.
Student 1 Suggest going somewhere or doing something.
- Suggest visiting a museum (a park, a club, your school).
- Suggest trying some national dish.
- Suggest buying a souvenir.
Student 2 Say you are unwilling to do it and give reasons why.
1) Possible phrases:
- Saying you are unwilling to do something: I’d rather not, actually. / I don’t really want to… / I’d prefer not to… / I wish I could, but… / I’m afraid I can’t possibly… / I’d like to, but… / I don’t really fancy… / I’m not really willing…
- Giving reasons: Well, you see,… / The reason was that… / Let me explain. / Well, the thing is,… / It’s like this; you see,… / The main reason is that… / If I could explain…
2) The situation determines the language you use: with friends you can use informal phrases, with a teacher you should use neutral or formal language, and with an adult you do not know well you should sound polite and formal.
3) Other suitable reasons:
- I have a lot of homework.
- I’m not feeling well.
- I have already made other plans.
- My parents don’t allow me to do that.
- I don’t have enough money.
- I’m busy that day.

5) Possible answers:
- Go to the art gallery: I’d rather not go to the art gallery. I’m not very interested in paintings.
- Try a new dish: I’d like to, but I’m afraid I can’t. I have a very sensitive stomach.
- Do a project: I’d prefer not to do it today because I have too much homework.
- Come to school on Sunday: I’m afraid I can’t come to school on Sunday. It’s my day off.
- Bring photos to school: I’d rather not bring my photos to school because I don’t want to lose them.
- Go to the cinema with the class: I don’t really want to go to the cinema with the class. I’ve already seen the film.
- Wear a uniform: I’m not really willing to wear a uniform because I prefer casual clothes.
6) Sample dialogues:
- Offer to give a lift: Would you like me to give you a lift? — I’d rather not, thanks. I’m going somewhere else.
- Offer to sell a watch cheaper than in a shop: I can sell you this watch cheaper than in a shop. — I’m afraid I can’t buy it. I don’t need a watch now.
- Ask to carry a bag through customs: Could you carry this bag through customs for me? Someone will meet it on arrival. — I’d rather not. I don’t want to take responsibility for it.
- Ask to exchange money: Could you exchange some money for me? — I’m afraid I can’t. I don’t have enough cash with me.
- Offer to give a drug to try: Would you like to try this drug? — No, thank you. I’m not willing to take medicine without a doctor’s advice.
7) Possible answers:
- Visit a museum: I’d rather not visit a museum today. I’m not really interested in museums.
- Visit a park: I’d like to, but I’m afraid it’s too cold today.
- Visit a club: I’d prefer not to go to a club. I’m too tired.
- Visit your school: I’d be happy to visit your school. It sounds interesting.
- Try a national dish: I’d like to try it, but I can’t eat spicy food.
- Buy a souvenir: I’d rather not buy one now because I’ve already spent my money.
