1) People made many efforts to change the situation: they invented and improved different means of communication at a distance, such as the telegraph, the telephone and later cordless telephones.
2) In my opinion, the most important event was the invention of the telephone, because it made direct communication much faster and easier. The telegraph and later improvements in electricity and radio made this invention possible.
