What do you think about playing video games? (relating information to personal experience)
- Which opinions do you share? Do you think video games can influence people’s behaviour?
- What video games do you prefer to play, if any? What is your parents’ attitude to games?
- Some parents don’t allow their children to play video games. Are they right? Write an opinion essay.
- Study the two photos on pp. 96—97. Be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:
- give a brief description of the photos (action, location);
- say what the pictures have in common;
- say in what way the pictures are different;
- say which way of using a computer you’d prefer;
- explain why.
I think video games can be both useful and harmful. They can help people relax, improve reaction speed and develop logical thinking. However, if a person plays too much, games may affect behaviour negatively and make them less active in real life.
I prefer educational or strategy games, because they are interesting and make me think. My parents are rather strict about games. They think that playing is fine only when it does not take too much time and does not interfere with study or sleep.
In my opinion, parents are right to limit video games if children spend too much time on them. Games should be a hobby, not the main activity in a child’s life. It is important to keep a balance between entertainment, study and real communication with friends and family.
As for the photos, I would say that both of them show people using a computer. In one picture the person is probably playing a video game, while in the other one the computer is used for work or study. The pictures are similar because in both cases a computer is involved, but they are different in purpose and atmosphere. I would prefer using a computer for useful activities, because they help me learn something new and develop my skills.
