1. A 2-minute talk
The political systems of Russia and the USA have some common features and some differences. Both countries are republics and both have a president as the head of state. In both political systems, power is divided into three branches: the legislative, the executive and the judicial branches.
In Russia, the Federal Assembly represents the legislative branch. It consists of the State Duma and the Federation Council. The executive branch is represented by the Government, and the head of the executive branch is the Prime Minister. The judicial branch is represented by the courts.
In the USA, Congress represents the legislative branch. It consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The executive branch is headed by the President, and the judicial branch is represented by the Supreme Court and other federal courts.
The Russian President has more power than the US President because in Russia the President is not only the head of state but also has strong control over the government and the political system as a whole. In the USA, the President’s powers are limited by Congress and the Supreme Court.
The system of checks and balances is used to make sure that no branch of power becomes too strong. Each branch can control the others, and this helps keep the political system balanced and democratic.
2. Role-play

British friend: Of course.
Student: What is the role of the Queen in the political life of the country?

British friend: The Shadow Cabinet watches the work of the government, criticises its policy and prepares alternative solutions.
Student: What are the functions of the Non-Cabinet Ministers?
British friend: They help the government, deal with special tasks and support the work of the Cabinet.
Student: And what are the links with the Commonwealth?
British friend: The UK has historical and political ties with the Commonwealth. The Queen is also the head of the Commonwealth, and Britain cooperates with its member countries.
