Do you approve of…?
Are you for…?
What is your attitude towards…?
Is… all right, d’you think? - Do you think the mass media somehow influences the violence of teenagers?
- What is your attitude towards these different opinions about young people?
- Youth culture is a lot more commercial than it was years ago.
- Teens are influenced by their peer group (group of people of the same age) much more than by their parents.
- Older people don’t feel as strong the need to identify with a particular subculture as younger people do.
- Hippies are sure that the way to peace is through love and tolerance.
- Youth violence is on the rise. That’s why it is necessary to lower the minimum criminal-trial age.
- Violence frequently results from the frustration that people feel when they can’t integrate into society.
- Television has a big influence on the youth violence. Teens often sit glued to the TV hypnotised by the violence shown on the screen.
- Drugs and alcohol destroy people. They’ve got that death tag on them.
- How can one detect that there is a street gang in the area?
- Are youth gangs really dangerous?
1) I approve of their deeds because they are very good and useful.
I approve of their music because it is very good.
I think their image is quite right.
I can’t approve of their clothes.
Their behaviour seems just right.
I’m all for such groups and organisations.
I disapprove of their values and beliefs because they are all wrong.
I don’t think their attitude towards others is very good.
2) My attitude towards subcultures, fan clubs and organisations for teens is rather positive. I think they help teenagers find friends, share interests and express themselves. However, some groups can be threatening if they encourage violence, drugs or aggressive behaviour.
3) Yes, I do. The mass media can influence teenagers a lot, especially through films, TV shows and the Internet. If violence is shown too often, some teens may start to think it is normal.
4) I agree that youth culture is much more commercial than it was years ago. I also think that teens are influenced by their peer group more than by their parents. Older people usually do not need to identify with a subculture as strongly as younger people do. I agree that hippies believe in peace, love and tolerance. I think youth violence is a serious problem, but lowering the criminal-trial age is not always the best solution. Violence can result from frustration and problems with integration into society. Television can have a strong influence on youth violence. Drugs and alcohol are very dangerous and destroy people.
5) You can detect a street gang in the area by the way teenagers behave: they often gather in groups, wear similar clothes, use special signs or slang, and may act aggressively or suspiciously.
6) Yes, youth gangs can be dangerous because they may be involved in violence, theft, drugs and other crimes. They can also threaten other teenagers and people in the neighbourhood.
