  1. Adrian means that his mother is very strong-willed and bossy, so she makes him do a lot of housework.
  2. It took him the whole day. Most of the jobs were done one after another, so each one probably took only a short time, but altogether they filled the day.
  3. By the end of the day Adrian had cleaned the toilet and bath, washed the basin, done his paper-round, made breakfast, put the washing in the machine, gone to school, given Barry Kent his menace money, visited Bert Baxter, waited for the social worker, had school dinner, made apple crumble, vacuumed the hall, lounge and breakfast room, peeled potatoes, chopped cabbage, cut his finger, made gravy, set the table, served dinner, washed up, put the burnt saucepans to soak, hung the washing on the clotheshorse, fed the dog, ironed his PE kit, cleaned his shoes, done his homework, taken the dog for a walk, had a bath, cleaned the bath, made three cups of tea, washed the cups up and gone to bed.

  5. He also used a vacuum cleaner to vacuum the hall, lounge and breakfast room, an iron to iron his PE kit, and probably a grill pan, saucepans and other kitchen utensils to cook and wash up. The story shows that he did almost all the housework himself.
  6. In the story washing means A. clothes being washed or waiting to be washed.
  7. apple crumble — a dish of fruit covered with a rough mixture of flour, butter and sugar and cooked in the oven

gravy — the juice that comes from meat while it is being cooked, a sauce made from this
