You’ve got an e-mail letter from your British friend who is getting ready for the quiz “Across Russia”. She/he wants to know:
- what political system Russia belongs to;
- when the Russian Constitution was adopted;
- where the Government and the President sit;
- what the origin of the word “Duma” is;
- if there is any relation between the Federal Assembly and the Federal Council.

Thank you for your e-mail. I’m glad to help you with the quiz “Across Russia”.
Russia is a democratic federative state with a republican form of government. The Russian Constitution was adopted on December 12, 1993. The Government sits in the White House in Moscow, and the President works in the Kremlin. The word “Duma” comes from the Russian verb dumat, which means “to think”. The Federal Assembly is the parliament of Russia. It consists of two chambers: the State Duma and the Federation Council, so the Federal Council is one of the parts of the Federal Assembly.
