  1. America’s history dates back over 20,000 years when the first travellers were thought to have migrated using the Bering Land Bridge to Alaska. But people know little about that period and since then there have been many events in American history. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights.
  2. The inhabitants of the precolonial United States were the Native Americans. They had their first contact with European explorers in the year 1000 when Vikings landed in Newfoundland. Then in 1492 Christopher Columbus landed in Puerto Rico. However, it wasn’t until 1513 that Juan Ponce de Leon set foot on the continental US when he came to Florida. Between the years 1513 and 1803 in American history there was much French, British and Spanish exploration.
  3. The United States of America was known as British America before its independence. Between the years 1776 and 1789 the United States itself was formed. It declared its independence from the British Crown after a Revolutionary War. In 1787 the Constitution of the United States of America was adopted. The Constitution laid the foundation of the United States federal government.
  4. Between the years 1789 and 1849 the major focus was expanding to the west. The Louisiana purchase of 1803 (when a vast territory of Louisiana was bought from France) gave people the opportunity to use the Mississippi River and helped in their expansion by removing the French from that area. Unfortunately, American newcomers forced Native Americans from their homes in the east, making them relocate in the west, despite their protests.
  5. The next era in US history is the Civil War period, from 1849—1865. During this time the slavery southern states decided to leave the union with the northern states and establish an independent country free of the north. The northern states fought for the union and abolishing slavery and the South lost in 1865.
  6. The United States focused on rebuilding and industrialization between the years 1865 and 1918. By the end of the 19th century, the USA had become a leading industrial power, building on new technologies. During the period a lot of immigrants came to America to live and work there. The immigrants’ arrival was positive for American economics because it provided plants and factories with more and more workers. Hard times came in 1918 when the US entered World War I.
  7. The post WWI and Great Depression Era took place between 1918 and 1940. In 1929 the greatest in modern history world economic crisis destroyed the market, and there was a dramatic fall to poverty and unemployment. President Roosevelt’s huge projects were a success; they helped the country’s economy to get better.
