Задача

II. READING COMPREHENSION

Read the extract from the book Along the Road by A. Huxley. For each gap (A—F), choose the best phrase (1—7). One phrase is extra. Write down your answers.

Some people travel on business, some to improve their health. But it is neither the sick people nor the businessmen (A) … and the pockets of their owners. It is those who travel “for pleasure” as the phrase says. What Epicurus, who never travelled, wanted to find in his own garden, our tourists look for abroad. And do they find happiness there? Most tourists who fill the resorts are in the majority very gloomy-looking people. I haven’t seen many bright faces in Venice. Only when the tourists can get together and imagine for a brief moment that they are at home, the tourists do look really happy. One wonders why they come abroad.

The fact is that very few travellers really like travelling. If they go to the trouble and expense of travelling, it is not from curiosity, for fun or because (B) … . They travel to show off. People travel for the same reason as they collect works of art: because the best people do it. To have been to certain places on the earth is socially correct and because of it (C) … are more prominent than those, who have not. Moreover, travelling gives people something to talk (D) … . The topics of the conversations are not so numerous that anybody can ignore an opportunity to add something new.

To give good reason for this self-importance, a lot of myths have been worked out. The places where it is socially worth having visited are supposed to be fabulous for those who haven’t been there. Those who have travelled have a personal interest in maintaining these legends. For if Paris and Monte Carlo are really so marvellous as they are generally supposed by the inhabitants of Bradford or Milwaukee, of Tomsk and Bergen, why then the disappointment of the travellers who have actually visited these places is the greater, and (E) … . It is for this reason (and because they pay the hotel owners and the ship companies) that (F) … are kept going.

  1. their advantage over the stay-at-homes the more enormous
  2. the myths about these places
  3. about when they get back home
  4. who fill the Grand Hotels
  5. they like to see beautiful things
  6. for those who tell travel stories
  7. people who have been there
