The facts mentioned in the text “Handmade Beauty” that were new to me were the old ways of making paints and the different techniques artists used to create pictures.
The text gave different kinds of pictures made with various techniques: drawings, watercolours, oil paintings, mosaics, frescoes, and icons. I think the most difficult techniques are frescoes and mosaics because they require a lot of skill and patience. The easiest technique is probably drawing. I have tried drawing and watercolours.
In an artist’s studio you can see easels, brushes, paints, palettes, canvases, pencils, and paper. They are used for painting, mixing colours, sketching, and creating pictures.
The invention of oil paints was a revolution in painting because artists could work more slowly, mix colours better, and create richer and more realistic pictures.
Fyodor Rokotov probably bought his paints ready-made. Ready-made paints save time, are more convenient to use, and give the artist more freedom to work.
I could paint a landscape in warm colours. It might show a sunny autumn park with yellow, orange, and red trees. Such colours make the picture feel bright and cheerful.
The main genres of painting are portrait, landscape, still life, historical painting, and genre painting. I prefer landscapes. An example is Ivan Shishkin’s Morning in a Pine Forest.
I prefer painting because it can show colours, light, and mood very clearly. Famous sculptors include Michelangelo, Auguste Rodin, and Edgar Degas. Their works can be seen in museums, galleries, and public places. The most wonderful piece of sculpture I have ever seen is Michelangelo’s David. It is powerful, realistic, and beautiful.
The two main sculpture techniques are carving and modelling. Carving means removing material from stone or wood, while modelling means building a form from clay or wax. Michelangelo worked in carving, and Edgar Degas worked in modelling.
