Volcanoes are usually divided into three types according to their activity: active, dormant and extinct. There are about 1,500 active volcanoes on Earth. Most of them are located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, especially in Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Alaska, and the west coast of North and South America.

Some of the most notorious eruptions in history were the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, which destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum, Krakatoa in 1883, and Mount St. Helens in 1980. These eruptions caused huge destruction and many deaths.

Volcanic eruptions can lead to lava flows, ash clouds, poisonous gases, fires, earthquakes and landslides. They may destroy houses, roads and crops, and force people to leave their homes. To reduce the danger, scientists monitor volcanoes, study seismic activity, measure gas emissions and give warnings in advance. People living near volcanoes should follow evacuation plans and stay away from dangerous areas.
