People increase the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere in many ways.

• When they burn coal, oil and gas in power stations, factories and cars, a lot of carbon dioxide is released.
• When they cut down forests, there are fewer trees to absorb carbon dioxide.
• When they keep large numbers of animals on farms, methane is produced.
• When rubbish is burned or left to rot in landfills, more harmful gases are formed.

For example, using too many cars, heating houses with fossil fuels and wasting electricity also increase greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
