Use a dictionary. a) shadow — shade Both shadow and shade can mean “a dark area where the light from the sun does not reach because it is blocked by something”. On a bright summer day we can be in the shade or in shadow (in the shadows). At the same time, dark shapes made on a surface when someone or something is between the surface and a light are shadows, not shades. E.g. The trees cast long shadows in the evening light. b) Lump — piece A lump is a solid piece of something of many shapes or sizes. That’s why we can speak of a lump of metal, or coal, a lump of cheese, meat, butter or sugar. In its turn the word piece means a part that has been cut, broken or separated from something large (a piece ofland, piece of wood, a piece of cake).
