Подробный ответ

When Mary awakened she sat up and stared at the wall. The house was perfectly still. She had never known it to be so silent before. She listened attentively but heard neither voices nor footsteps and wondered if everybody had died of the cholera and all the trouble was over. She also wanted to know who would take care of her now when her nurse was dead. There would be a new nurse, and perhaps she would tell some new stories. Mary was rather tired of the old ones. She was sorry because her nurse had died. She was not an affectionate child and did not care much for anyone. “I am sure somebody will come soon,” she thought. “If they don’t, I shall not know what to do. I have been alone so long.” Suddenly the door opened. The first man who came in was a large officer she had never seen before. When he saw her he almost stepped back. “Barney!” he cried. “What is happening here?” Mary looked at him and said, “I was lying asleep when everyone had cholera. I just woke up. Where is everybody? Why is it so quiet?” “Poor little kid,” said the officer. “There is nobody left to come.”
