The Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

On 11 March 2011, a powerful earthquake and tsunami hit the north-east coast of Japan. The disaster happened near the city of Sendai. The earthquake was extremely strong, and the tsunami waves were very high. They destroyed houses, roads, bridges and many coastal towns.

Many people were trapped or lost their homes. Rescue teams, soldiers, police officers and volunteers worked hard to save people and deliver food, water and medicine. Thousands of people were evacuated to safe places.

It was a terrible natural disaster, and it was impossible to stop the earthquake itself. However, some damage could have been reduced if buildings and coastal defences had been even stronger. Better warning systems and emergency preparation also helped save lives.
