Prometheus was the friend of man and the protector of the human race. He stole fire and gave it to people as a gift. He also taught people all he knew. This angered Zeus, and he decided to punish Prometheus. The punishment was very harsh: Prometheus was chained to a peak in the Caucasus, and every day an eagle flew to the peak and pecked out his liver. The next day he had to undergo the same torment again. Thirty years passed before Heracles came and released Prometheus.
