IT’S YOUR CHOICE
The number of people enrolling at colleges is soaring — every year sees a rise in the numbers of students-to-be. They most often choose political science, international affairs, psychology, sociology and computer studies. However, the problem is, will there be jobs for ALL of them in the future? Do we need that many sociologists or experts in politics?
Debate on the rising number of private colleges and universities — Ministry of Education asks: do we need so many?

Student A: I have a problem. I don’t understand the listening exercises in class or people in the street. Could you give me some advice? Thank you. When will I begin to make progress?

Student B: Don’t worry. Most foreign students have the same problem. You need as much contact with English as possible. Listen to recordings in the language laboratory, listen to the radio and watch television. The more conversations you have in English, the sooner you will start to speak and understand fluently.

2. Sample answers

1) Some sports become popular among teenagers because they are exciting, fashionable and often shown on TV. Sport stars and media coverage play a big role: when teenagers see famous athletes and exciting competitions, they want to try the same sports.

2) In Russia, football and swimming are becoming more popular, while volleyball is becoming less popular. Cycling and snowboarding are also growing in popularity. This may happen because these sports are widely discussed in the media and are seen as modern and healthy.

3) The materials deal with the choice of subjects at university, the popularity of different courses, and the advantages and disadvantages of studying at state and private universities.

4) Students more often choose political science, international affairs, psychology, sociology and computer studies. Fewer students choose subjects that seem less practical or less likely to lead to a good job. This can be a problem because too many graduates may choose the same subjects, while there may not be enough jobs for all of them.

5) Exams are a useful way of testing knowledge, but they do not show everything. They can check facts and skills, but they may not show creativity, speaking ability or how well a student works in real life.

6) Young people may choose private universities because they often have smaller groups, better equipment, more modern courses and a more comfortable learning environment. Some students also think private universities give better chances for future careers.

7) I would most like to study computer studies in the future because it is interesting, useful and gives many opportunities for a good job.
