Tim: And welcome to Book World, the show that tells you the books to buy and the things to read. I’m Timothy Garner, and our guest in the studio this week is the youngest author we’ve ever had on the show, Emily Darling. She’s only 17 years old, and she’s written a wonderful book called The Games We Play! Hi, Emily.
Emily: Hello.
Tim: Why don’t you tell us something about your book?
Emily: Well, it’s a kind of a history of games and pastimes around the world.
Tim: And what gave you the idea of writing the book?
Emily: Well, I’ve always loved playing games and doing puzzles. But often I wanted to know more about the game I was playing, so I thought it would be a good idea to have one book which tells you all about the games we play, and why we play them.
Tim: What’s your favourite game, Emily?
Emily: It’s difficult to say. But probably Monopoly. Tim: Yes, Monopoly must be the most popular board game ever.
Emily: Yes, that’s right. It’s sold in 80 countries and produced in 26 languages. It was invented in 1935 by Charles Darrow, and since then more than two hundred million games have been sold and more than five hundred million people have played it.
Tim: Do you think that’s because we all want to play at being millionaires?
Emily: Yeah, probably.
Tim: What’s the oldest game in the world?
Emily: It could be chess. Nobody’s really sure, but some people say that chess started in India about fifteen hundred years ago. Others say it started in China even earlier. And it’s more popular today than it’s ever been. There are more than six hundred million chess players in the world.
Tim: How has chess managed to remain so popular for so long?
Emily: I think it’s because there are still a lot of people out there who like using their brains.
Tim: Do you think that’s why people like Sudoku too?
Emily: Yes, definitely.
Tim: It’s incredible how popular Sudoku has become in such a short time!
Emily: Well, yes and no. The original idea came from an eighteenth century Swiss mathematician! And then in the 1970s a magazine in the USA started publishing Sudoku puzzles.
Tim: Really?
Emily: Yes, but it never became popular until the Japanese started doing it in 1986.
Tim: What does sudoku mean?
Emily: Su means number in Japanese, and doku refers to the only place on the board where you can put each number.
Tim: How popular is it?
Emily: It’s hard to tell, because it’s still growing. But it’s very popular. There must be hundreds or perhaps thousands of newspapers and magazines around the world with Sudoku puzzles. And then there are all the puzzle books and…
