Kate: Just a bit… Thanks, Jane.
Jane: So what do you think of the new guy in accounts?
Kate: Who — the cute blond?
Jane: Right — straight from a bottle!
Kate: No, I think it might be his natural colour.
Jane: Really? So you’ve had a good look at him then!?
Kate: Well, he’s not bad looking, is he?
Jane: No — but that hairstyle’s a bit much.
Kate: Maybe he just wanted a new ‘look’ for his new job. Actually he’s quite nice …
Jane: How do you know? Have you spoken to him?
Kate: Well, he was having problems with the photocopier yesterday, so I showed him how it worked and…
Jane: And what did he say?
Kate: Not much. He introduced himself — his name’s Colin … You know, office chat.
Jane: So did he ask you out?
Kate: Jane! Of course not! He seemed quite reserved. But it’s his first job, so he’s probably feeling a bit lost…
Jane: Maybe. He looks quite fit though — the sporty type.
Kate: Yes, I’ve seen him with a gym bag. Expect he works out on the way home.
Jane: Pity about the suits though.
Kate: Don’t you like them?
Jane: Well, they’re very smart and all that — but they’re a bit too trendy for my taste. He looks a bit too self-conscious — you know, as if he’s not very comfortable in them.
Kate: So you don’t fancy him then?
Jane: No, Kate — he’s all yours! I wouldn’t go out with him if you paid me.

Jack: Yeah, Dave — fantastic match, wasn’t it? Talking of football, have you seen Colin recently?
Dave: Yes, and had the shock of my life!
Jack: I know — I’ve never seen anybody change so much. It’s a bit drastic, isn’t it?
Dave: A bit?! I’ve been playing football with him for five years, Jack — and I didn’t even recognise him when I saw him a couple of weeks ago.
Jack: Yeah — same here. He looks great though, don’t you think?
Dave: What the smart suits and the blond hair? Thinks he’s an upmarket young professional now, does he?
Jack: Mmm, I suppose the ‘look’ is a bit over the top -but no, what I meant was that he looks much fitter now. I’ve seen him working out at the gym. He needed to though — he was getting to look sloppy, putting on weight, you know.
Dave: True. But still, I think he’s gone too far with this ‘makeover’ business. What was wrong with the way he looked before? Who’s he trying to impress?
Jack: I know what you mean, but I heard he couldn’t get a job for ages after we all left college — so maybe that’s the reason. I don’t know — I haven’t talked to him for ages.
Dave: Exactly — that’s my point! He doesn’t even get in touch with us any more. Aren’t we good enough for him or what?
Jack: I don’t know. But look, he is an old mate after all. Why don’t we give him a call? Meet him for a coffee or something? Maybe he thinks we’re all laughing behind his back?
Dave: What, Colin? I doubt it — he was never short on confidence before.
Jack: Well anyway, I’ll call him.
Dave: OK, suit yourself … but he won’t come. He’s changed, you wait.

Dave: Right — so what’s been going on then, Colin? What’s all this with the ‘makeover’?
Colin: So you don’t like my new look then? Well, every man to his taste, they say.
Dave: Mmm, maybe …
Jack: So why did you do it, Colin? Was it because you couldn’t get a job?
Colin: Well, that started it, I suppose … I was having a coffee near the place where I had a job interview about a month ago, and the two guys who interviewed me came in. They didn’t see me — but I heard one of them say, ‘I can’t stand it when they don’t try to make a good impression. Did you see that old leather jacket he was wearing?’ Well, I knew they were talking about me, but thought, well, they’re just boring old businessmen and forgot about it.
Dave: Right — who needs a suit anyway?!
Jack: So what was the reason then, Colin? Come on …
Colin: No, it was all very silly really — you’ll laugh. Jack: No, we won’t. Promise. Dave …
Dave: OK, OK.
Colin: Right — well, what happened was. I was in the supermarket, you know, standing in a queue at the checkout — and suddenly I looked up at the CCTV monitor on the wall. I noticed this scruffy looking guy standing there — I couldn’t see his face, but I thought, ‘What a loser. Nobody would give him a job. Why doesn’t he smarten himself up a bit — get a haircut, buy some new clothes?’ That sort of thing. Then as I moved along in the queue, I saw the guy move too -and suddenly realised it was me!
Jack: Oh, ha-ha… really!?
Dave: Oh, no way!
Colin: I don’t know — maybe what the interviewer said had affected me on a subconscious level. Anyway, that’s when I decided to do something about the way I looked.
Jack: And you got a job!
Colin: Yes, I did actually. Just what I wanted in fact…
Dave: So what is this new job then, Colin?
