With an average annual temperature of −5.5°C, Russia is the coldest country in the world. The Russian winter lasts five months, from November to the end of March, and causes widespread difficulties with transportation. Throughout history, the Russian winter has provided protection for Russia, keeping its enemies at bay and, as a result, has been called “General Winter” and “General Snow”. The average and minimum temperatures in various regions of Russia differ. Winters are severe in Yakutia, with temperatures reaching −60°C. In the European part of Russia, west of the Ural Mountains, it is not so cold in winter, and the average temperature rarely falls below −15°C. However, occasionally it can get much colder. During the winter of 2005–2006, the temperature in Moscow averaged between −25°C and −30°C throughout January.
